Based on S&W's Chief Special, a model with a hidden hammer to prevent it from getting caught on clothing was developed for self-defense purposes and sold to the public under the name ``Bodyguard.''
This model differed from the double-action-only Centennial, which completely covered the hammer, but the tip of the hammer was exposed and could also be used for single action.
Initially, there was only a lightweight version with an aluminum frame (later the M38 Bodyguard Air Weight), but a steel frame version was also added to the lineup and was called the ``M49 Bodyguard.''
