[ LAPD Special Investigation Section (SIS) ] The LAPD's SIS is an elite unit organized in 1965 under the Robbery-Homicide Division (RDH) of the Detective Bureau. Known as a tactical investigative unit with the clear mission of tracking down and neutralizing the most dangerous criminals, they operate out of an unmarked office building in the notorious Skid Row district east of downtown Los Angeles—rather than LAPD headquarters—due to the covert nature of their work. The SIS is composed of approximately 20 top-tier investigators selected from within the LAPD; it is said that in the 40 years since the unit's inception, only 110 individuals have qualified for membership. Between 1965 and 1992, the SIS was involved in over 50 gunfights and used lethal force against 28 to 34 suspects; they famously sparked controversy when the *Los Angeles Times* derisively labeled them a "Death Squad."
[ Kimber SIS Custom ] Kimber Manufacturing was established in 1979, but it was not until the 1990s that the company began to garner significant attention in the U.S. firearms industry. This success stems from the introduction of a "factory custom" 1911—a model that came ready-to-use straight out of the box, featuring enhancements like highly ergonomic thumb and grip safeties, high-visibility sights, and a tuned trigger. Before the advent of the Kimber 1911, owners of standard 1911s—which offered only basic functionality—had to commission gunsmiths to perform upgrades, incurring additional costs and delays. By meeting the demands of the times, Kimber has grown into one of the premier firearms manufacturers in the United States. Around 2007, the LAPD's SIS (Special Investigation Section) commissioned Kimber to develop a custom 1911; this decision was heavily influenced by the fact that the U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command Detachment 1 (MCSOCOM Det-1) and the LAPD SWAT team had already adopted the company's custom 1911s.
[ LAPD SIS-Spec Tactical 1911 ] While the "SWAT Custom II" is the well-known Kimber 1911 adopted by the LAPD, the "SIS Custom" stands out for its extensive, specialized modifications—far beyond the mere addition of front-strap checkering found on the SWAT model. The most striking feature is the cocking serrations boldly emblazoned with the "SIS" logo; WA has faithfully reproduced this design by creating a dedicated mold. The area forward of the rear sight is deeply recessed to serve as a "cocking shoulder," a feature designed to allow the slide to be racked against objects like car doors or holster edges when one-handed operation is required—a unique addition reflecting the SIS's requirement for versatility in any situation.
The hammer features a smaller ring than standard skeletonized versions; this design, created specifically for the SIS Custom, minimizes the risk of snagging during carry or rapid draws from the holster. The frame features 30 LPI (lines per inch) checkering on the front strap and an integrated Picatinny rail on the dust cover. It utilizes the current standard "regular length" configuration with three mounting slots, accommodating a wide range of accessories.
This "2026 Ver." model incorporates "lightning cuts"—two on the top of the slide and one on each side—which not only reduce slide weight but also create an aggressive, distinctive look. While many handguns have been adopted by law enforcement agencies, few models boast this level of customization and unique, dedicated styling.
